As Sunshine Plaza’s full-service agency, Engine is not only responsible for everyday advertising projects. Our responsibilities extend beyond TV ads, posters, billboards, bus sides and direct mail. We also work with the centre’s marketing team to create eye-catching installations that bring our ads to life within the retail environment. The current fashion campaign comes to life in 3D above shoppers’ heads and the new Shop For Sunshine Kids campaign will be featured in 3D in the atrium near Target.

Engine can also produce design jobs, manage loyalty clubs, facilitate social media marketing and many other forms of communications, advertising, graphic design and public relations. It’s all part of the service.

Another month and another win, this time we’ve teamed up with purveyors of fine steaks and ribs, Lone Star Steakhouse Australia. The company’s experiencing somewhat of a renaissance, with the gradual roll out of a new look and new logo (to keep in line with the US version). Engine has been appointed in a full service capacity and over the next few months, you’ll be seeing all manner of traditional and digital advertising appearing in your area. Along with these graphically delicious electronic direct mail pieces, we’ve also been working on establishing a social networking presence for the brand. If you love food and in particular, steak, you’ll love Lone Star.

As we’ve mentioned in other posts, Ellaways is one of our social media success stories. They’ve been happy to embrace Facebook and Twitter for their brand and have grown a strong following of devoted music fans. Along with the regular tweets and updates, we still produce their EDM which is read by several thousand clients on a monthly basis. The feedback we’ve been getting has been great and we’ve now established a set visual look and feel for the brand which will come alive when their new website is uploaded. We can’t wait!

Last year, Engine CEO, Brent Jarvis was asked for some predictions on future trends for an article in a local paper. Possibly misjudging the reporter’s gullibility (or sense of humour), he suggested that being overweight was in and the fitness fad was over. Unbeknown-st to us, the report actually ran, causing minor embarrassment and major ribbing from staff and clients alike. But he may yet be proven to be right!
The new Double Down Sandwich is a sandwich in name, but not in nature. It’s the sort of thing you’d imagine Homer Simpson creating. Totally devoid of buns, they are replaced by two deep fried chicken fillets, housing two pieces of bacon ad melted cheese. At first we thought this culinary delight was an April Fool’s prank, but no, it really is going ahead. Forget skinny wraps, it looks like KFC are ready to re-embrace what made them famous in the first place, Kentucky fried goodness.

Following on the success of last year’s campaign, we’ve evolved the idea, to show what’s on the other side of the magical wardrobe. Leilani Wyatt flew in from LA (where she’s been making inroads into her acting career) to replay her role as the beautiful young lady and the work was shot by local photographer and icon, Erik Williamson and retouched by Justin Overell.

You’ve heard of Twitter, you’re all over Facebook, so what’s this Foursquare thing about? It’s a location based website, where you can check in to your current location, alerting friends and other Foursquare users to your whereabouts. Users can score points or badges for checking in and their location can be revealed on their Facebook and Twitter updates. Forget making a meeting time in front of Hungry Jacks’ (an iconic and traditional meeting place for all Brisbaners). Foursquare makes it easy to meet up, catch up with your contacts, all while looking like the quintessential socialite. Traditionally, radio was deemed to be the most powerful medium to ‘speak’ to consumers on their way to the shops. With Foursquare, you can communicate with them directly when they’re at the shops/bars/cafes/clubs etc. And savvy advertisers are already making use of this emerging technology. Foursquareoffers allows users to search for special offers based on their location – for example, if you check in at the American Book Shop on Elizabeth Street, you’ll be eligible for a free coffee with the purchase of a book. Forget shopper dockets, this is new, it’s hip and it’s now.

Is the iPad worth the paper it’s saving?

For Apple fanboys, a Steve Jobs keynote address is always the prelude to a new and exciting release and with the imminent arrival of the much lauded iPad to Australia’s shores, we’ve been watching the US reactions with great interest. For marketers, it could be the saviour of print media, at the same time, gathering intricate data on the user’s habits. This article from an American company sums it all up rather nicely.

Aside from print media, it stands to be a useful tool for artists, developers and musicians. Particularly interesting is its use for music production, something we’ve been looking out for on behalf of one of our clients, Ellaways Music. In just 4 days, a series of interesting applications have been released that turn the humble iPad into a control surface for recording programs, a sampler, a dance music production studio and the ultimate piece of sheet music, storing thousands of classic master works.

Amazon.com’s Kimble reader aside, we’re yet to see how it will effect publishing in Australia, with suggestions of online subscriptions for News Ltd products, especially with the introduction of a sub service for the New York Times.

Will it be worth it for the average user? We’ll have to wait and see. It certainly looks powerful and will be ideal for the basic user who doesn’t require a sophisticated operating system, flash or extra interfacing.
